It’s about darn time! O2B2 rises again!

OutOftheBlackBox Theatre Company’s PLAY-READING SERIES makes its debut!

Come join us on Monday, February 2nd at 7PM as we read and discuss TINY TIM’S LAST CHRISTMAS (CAROL) a new musical written by Penny Martin, under consideration for entry in the 2009 DC Fringe Festival. It’s your chance to participate in theatre without the added stress of remembering your lines.

“Expect the unexpected in this musical story of lost souls who are condemned, for their mistakes, to perform “A Christmas Carol” in Hell until they get it right. If the show is REALLY good, some souls will get out. Honest!”

This event will take place in Old Greenbelt, close to the Green Line and Metrobus. Space is limited. To reserve your place, please contact us ASAP. Confirmation is first come, first served.

(Click the link above and fill out the form – location and confirmation will be sent when your reservation has been recorded.)

Please pass this info on to anyone you think might be interested! Not all roles require singing, so it’s open to everyone!

ALSO!

Details for Catch-22 Auditions posted! Mark your calendars and pass it on!

PSA: Washington Revels has a job opening!

I should have done this before I left, but I was so wrapped up in prep, I forgot until this morning.

There’s a Marketing Director position open at Washington Revels, and I thought I would pass the info on!

Please follow the link below for contact information and instructions on applying for the position.

http://www.revelsdc.org/job-marketing.html

“Summary: Washington Revels seeks an experienced, energetic and highly personable Marketing Director to manage and coordinate all aspects of promoting general public awareness as well as performances and events. Specific responsibilities include advertising and all other media publicity; web site and social media content and oversight; production and distribution of printed and electronic materials; displays and exhibit booths; and ticket management and promotion. Will report directly to the Executive Director and also work closely with the Development Director, Office Manager, volunteers and the Board Marketing Committee. Given small size of the office, must be willing to help occasionally with non-marketing activities. Position intended as full-time, but depending on experience could accommodate 80% part-time. Not an overtime position; some evening/weekend hours during periods of high activity, with extra time given off during lighter periods. Start date as soon as practical.”

John C. Malloy, 1936 – 2008

As Artistic Director and also director of O2B2’s first two productions, it’s my sad duty to report that John Malloy, who played “John” in Six Characters in Search of an Author and shared the role of “Capitano” in A Company of Wayward Saints (his last onstage role) has passed on after suffering from the long-term effects of lung disease. His obituary, published in the Capital Gazette, follows.

John, a gentleman in every sense of the word, was a pleasure to work with and I am terribly sorry for of his loss. My company and I extend our deep condolences to his wife Nancy and his family.

From da O2B2 BOD President!

Hi, everyone,

This is a reminder that the annual membership meeting of O2B2 will be held on Saturday, July 12, at 10am, at my house. Directions: [redacted – comment for more information!]

The primary business of the meeting is the election of Board members. Nominees for Board members are Bill Jones, Betsy Delaney, Greg Mangiapane, Sandra True, Lise Mendel-Kramer, Penny Martin, and Jo Rake.

I perform in Coriolanus at 2pm at Warehouse in DC, so I have to leave shortly after noon, but my wife Ginny says you can stay a while and chat after the meeting.

Good news: O2B2 was awarded a “Judges’ [Discretionary] Award of Excellence” for Then, Now, You at the NVTA Festival. Jo and Greg were the actors in it. We got a plaque that Betsy will bring to the meeting.

O2B2 has received approval to put on Catch-22 at Greenbelt Arts Center the weekends of June 5, 12, and 19 (though we may decide to make it only the last two weekends). I will direct. We will discuss details at the meeting.

Sorry about the short time slot for the meeting (I’ll have soft drinks available, though no lunch), but I’m pretty busy right now – I’m directing Measure For Measure at GAC, I’m playing Rev. Gardner in GAC’s Mrs. Warren’s Profession, I’m playing Citizen #3 in the Rude’s Coriolanus, and I’m producing a Children’s Theater version of Comedy Of Errors for Labor Day (when you take out the sex, you get just 20 minutes of slapstick and farce).

O2B2 sponsors a basic theatrical makeup workshop

OutOftheBlackBox Theatre Company (O2B2) will hold a workshop on basic theatrical makeup techniques on Saturday, February 23, 2008 from 2 to 4 PM at Goodloe Memorial Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 1540C Pointer Ridge Place, Bowie, MD. Cost is $15. Due to space limitations, reservations are necessary and should be made by calling 301-262-5201 or through O2B2’s website – www.outoftheblackbox.org by February 21.

Award winning make up artist Sheila Hyman will discuss and demonstrate basic stage makeup, corrective makeup techniques, aging and looking younger, and creating and implementing your own makeup designs. She will also discuss the “must haves” of a good makeup kit, reference books and stores, and period makeup.

Participants are encouraged to bring their makeup kits for examination and use, towel or smock to protect clothing, hair barrettes or bands, facial cleansers and extra contact lens solution (lens wearers), makeup mirrors, and a digital camera to document designs.

Sheila Hyman has been creating makeup and hair designs for theatre groups for close to two decades. She received a Washington Area Theatre Community Honors (WATCH) award for Seussical! (Port Tobacco Players) and The Rocky Horror Show (Elden Street Players) and received WATCH nominations for A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Port Tobacco Players), The Mikado (Tantallon Community Players) and All My Sons (Port Tobacco Players). She won an ACT award for Ruthless! The Musical (Dominion Stage).
